Teenagers need to be exposed to the issues of the world and not protected from it. The book doesn’t sensationalize the issue at hand, but it doesn’t sugarcoat it either. Issues Present: murder, crime, trials, bullyingĭefenses: Monster is a book that looks at a real issue being felt by many in society today. It shows the complexity of humanity and how not one of us is just what the world sees. Monster is a book that can be used to address concerns of kids who are seeing their friends and family go through similar situations, or are going through them personally. The things that we, the reader, know that the courtroom didn’t is the everyday life he lived and his passion for film and the way he was different than his neighbors. He was presented as a product of his environment. It is noted many times how Steve grew up in a poor area and these were the kids that he grew up with. It hurt on a level that I can see this happening to people around the country and there was a hopelessness that was only slightly corrected by the ending.īibliotherapeutic Usefulness: This book deals with a the expectations and prejudices placed on people who are African-American and grow up in the inner-city. We look at the people who committed the murder and the way that they have worked the system to be given a different/lighter sentence and Steve who was the smallest part of the crime, is facing years and years in prison.

Steve’s story is one that has so much relevance in modern America and the society that we see reflected every day. Reading Level/Interest Level: YHS/YHS, OHSĮvaluation: Having not read the original book, I was suprised by the depth of the book and the emotions that it pulled from me. Throughout the book, we know that Steve isn’t a killer but because a large part of this is told as a first person perspective piece, we follow with Steve as even he begins to question his innocence and his position in society.
